Medill is offering a unique opportunity for Fall Quarter 2011 to graduate students who have completed at least three of their four quarters to participate in a 5th Quarter Specialization Program in National Security Reporting. Students will expand their knowledge of the issues through seminars, then launch major reporting projects with a unified overarching theme – such as military justice or failing states. Download a brochure on the Washington-based program.
Coming soon: A new site (and more)
In the next few weeks, we will launch a fresh new look, complete with a new name and web address, for our site.
The relaunch will be followed by an ongoing roll out of new content and interactive tools that we think will set us on our way to becoming one of the best learning and networking resources for those who cover national security issues.

‘America’s Shadow Warriors’
Medill National Security Journalism Initiative's Carnegie Corporation fellow Tara McKelvey presented a new paper to the Buffett Center Working Group on Security Studies on Oct. 13 in Evanston. "America’s Shadow Warriors: Legal Dimensions of Special Forces and the Targeted Warfare" is available for download (PDF).
The paper argues that "administration officials, the media, and the American public know too little about the success of these clandestine operation and their consequences, particularly the unintended ones, to make an informed decision about whether or not the benefits of these wide-scale, covert actions outweigh their costs."
